The region of DNA within a gene that codes for a polypeptide chain or domain. Typically a mature protein is composed of several domains coded by different exons within a single gene.

- Protein Encoding Gene: This diagram focusses more on the step of creating the mRNA than the transcription or translation of protein syntheis, however the graph does label the location of promoters on DNA. The diagram shows how intons are not coded and are removed in the formation of mRNA while exons are only coded if they are within the open reading frame. Not shown on this diagram are the cap at the 5' end or the polyadenylatio n at the 3' end. This is relevant to the Biological Molecules (MB1001) module.
